Everyone loves the clear view of the open road you get with those huge windshields on Class A recreational vehicles. But in the rain or snow, it gets to be a challenge to keep that large glass cleared. It needs to be done reliably — as a matter of safety.
The problem with RV windshield wiper systems is the arms and blades get to be so long they start to flex. And the longer they get the more they flex. They flex so much that the sudden change of direction at the top and bottom of the wipe action ends up generating forces that are like cracking a whip. Whiplash causes unwanted wipe pattern growth. We saw in some motor homes that it would be as much as 4 to 6 inches.
In other words, what you thought was a nice wipe pattern all of a sudden has the blades going down over the window moldings at the bottom and whipping off the edge of the windshield at the top. When that happens, wiper system reliability degenerates, sometimes in a real hurry.
Until AM Equipment developed the 2P Series wiper system it was an industry-wide problem.
We needed to control pattern growth. But how?
Well, when we designed our 2P commercial wiper system we asked ourselves,
“Can we go back to our old systems to find everywhere we had a little bit of movement, a little bit of torquing, and take that out?”
When it came to the 2P series platform it turns out that, yes, we could.
Larger Diameter Pivot Shafts Eliminate Torsional Flex
We use 17 mm pivot shafts instead of 1⁄2 inch shafts to eliminate torsional flex.
Patented Motor Drive Arm Design
By eliminating a ball linkage we create a much longer life system without oversweep problems.
A diecast aluminum motor bracket, investment cast pivot arms and a cast drive arm prevent flex during operation.
Improved Ball Socket
We put all the wear on a sleeve bearing pin and use the ball socket just for alignment. That means no slop in the ball joints.

To make your installation as smooth as possible, we look at all the details, large and small. For example, most wiper systems use a DIN arm interface, which has a very narrow torque range for installation. We use a tapered knurl, with a wider torque range—meaning easier installation for you and fewer customer service complaints.
We’ve even thought to include a set of sphere plates with every unit to accommodate normal variations in the thickness of your fiberglass caps. So you get a clean installation in minutes.
Lower Installed Cost
Installing one of our custom manufactured 2P Wiper System on an RV requires tightening only two nuts and plugging the wiper motor and washer system in. How Does Our 2P System Compare?
Side by Side Comparison Shows Our 2P Series Wiper System is
Efficient, Easy, & Long Lasting
In December 2013 we conducted a side by side comparison of AM Equipment’s 2P Plug & Play Wiper System and TruVision’s ZD 1631 at our Wiper Engineering Test Facility in Jefferson Oregon. We also performed a standardized dynamometer based test of the wiper motors.
The results of our tests and comparison are summarized in the following sections.

Compare the Motors
We tested the 50 Nm wiper motor shipped with TruVision’s wiper system and the 38 Nm motor that’s shipped with the 2P Plug & Play System. The dynamometer based tests were conducted on November 6, 2013 on the TruVision motor and January 1, 2014 on the AM Equipment motor.
In each test we increased the torque load on the motor from zero until we reached the motor’s stall torque. We also simultaneously measured rotation speed (rpm) and current draw (amp) in order to calculate each motor’s efficiency (electrical power input: mechanical power output).
We’ve summarized the test results in the following figures and table.
Summary of Motor Test Results
There is no advantage to the TruVision 50 Nm motor. It underperformed compared to the AM Equipment 38 Nm motor at all loading factors. The Truvision motor is less efficient and operates at significantly higher temperatures than the AM Equipment model.

The average amp draw of the AM Equipment 38 Nm motor was just over 25% of the amp draw of the TruVision 50 Nm motor, (25.6% at low speed, 26.5% at high speed). Lowering amperage draw can save time and money. The primary benefit of using a lower amp motor is that the associated wiring harness and breakers need not be as large and spare electric capacity is available to operate other systems on the vehicle.
The AM Equipment motor drew less current regardless of torque load. So it is not surprising that the average efficiency is nearly 40 percent greater for the AM Equipment motor.
Efficient motors accomplish more work per unit of electricity consumed. They also have longer insulation and bearing lives, lower waste-heat output, and less vibration — all of which increase reliability.
There is a substantial difference in operating temperature between the AM Equipment and TruVision wiper motors. Higher operating temperature adversely affects circuit breaker performance, motor longevity due to insulation breakdown, and impairs electrical performance.
Even though the average operating temperature of the TruVision 50Nm motor was significantly higher than the AM Equipmnet Series 238 motor, the TruVision motor operated more slowly, particularly at the high speed setting.
High Speed RPM
We noticed that the TruVision 50 Nm motor that was shipped with the ZD 1631 system operated on the slow side, reaching a high speed of only 41.5 cycles per minute.* In contrast, Am Equipment’s 38 Nm reached 60 rpm while operating at high speed.
*Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards specify safety standards for various components on a vehicle. FMVSS Section 104 is specifically devoted to wiper systems. These are the minimum standards that wiper systems must must pass for any vehicle cleared for highway use.
