AM Equipment Wiper Systems on the NUTMobile!

Did you catch the Super Bowl? More importantly, did you watch the great commercials during the big game? If so, you probably noticed the Planters ad featuring Mr. Peanut careening through the streets in his NUTMobile, rushing to save Alex Rodriguez from sub-par snacks, passing Charlie Sheen on the way.

Guess whose wiper system cleared the windshield for Mr. Peanut… AM Equipment’s!!!

230-unitized-wiper-assembly.jpg

Our Applications CAD Specialist, Rene Widger, worked with our customer to design a system specifically for the NUTMobile, and the whole Super Bowl-watching nation saw it! The NUTMobile uses two of our 230 Unitized Assemblies with 21” Commercial Duty Wiper Arms and 20” Wiper Blades.

Great job, Rene! We’ve never seen a nuttier application of our wiper systems (groan).

Sample Application: Windshield Wiper Systems for Snowplows

Winter wonderland or traffic nightmare?

By definition, snowplows operate in the worst weather. They’re out clearing streets so the rest of us can travel safely. At the same time, AM Equipment long-life wiper systems clear snowplow windshields so the drivers can see what they’re doing.

snowplow-windshield-wipers.png

Our wiper assemblies maximize visibility for snowplow drivers in all conditions and exceed SAE standards.  Since we use rigorous testing and quality control protocols, we offer the longest warranty in the industry:  two years.

AM Equipment windshield wiper systems can be engineered to resist oil, water, sand, and all types of weather—let us know what you need for your application!

Customer Spotlight: Bright Coop, Inc.

AM Equipment has supplied windshield wiper systems to the forklift industry for decades, but our assemblies are now on a new variant: chicken-moving forklifts. Bright Coop, Inc. produces a large range of poultry-handling equipment, including these specialized forklifts.

Improved Windshield Wiper Arms for the Marine Industry

Don’t worry—you can have them too, even if you don’t have a boat!

Our Standard Wiper Arms with 1/2” drum mounting have some terrific attributes for marine and other harsh environments. They are designed to pair well with our 212 Series DC Gear Motors, which are also popular for boats.

standard-duty-wiper-arm-marine.jpg

First of all, our arms offer greater corrosion resistance than most others because of their stainless steel and composite materials. Our tension springs are stainless steel, plus the arms themselves are made of sturdy stainless steel flat wire.

setscrew.png

Another bonus: this arm is simple to install and maintain because a single set screw torqued to 40 inch pounds secures it to the pivot shaft. Just one hex wrench necessary!

AM Equipment’s Standard Duty Wiper Arms with 1/2” drum mounting are available in the following configurations:

Sample Application: Windshield Wiper Systems for Delivery Vans

If you manufacture delivery vans, you know they’re expected to perform in any weather.  A little rain or snow doesn’t stop those trucks—they’ll roll through the neighborhood dropping off packages and riling up dogs no matter what!

Since inclement weather can hamper visibility for delivery drivers, AM Equipment offers dependable long-life windshield wiper systems to help them do their jobs safely.

AM Equipment’s wiper assemblies exceed SAE standards.  Because of our rigorous testing and quality control protocols, we offer the longest warranty in the industry:  two years!

Depending on your application, our systems can be designed to resist oil, water, sand, and all types of weather.  That keeps delivery drivers on their routes throughout the seasons, including that one guy who wears shorts year-round.  What’s his deal?

Sample Application: Windshield Wiper Systems on Dredges

File this one under "who knew these needed windshield wipers?"

dredge-windshield-wipers.png

As it turns out, windshield wipers are very helpful on dredges.  They keep vision clear from the cab in all sorts of weather and water conditions.

Many dredge builders prefer our 230 Unitized Assembly or our 2 Driver Pantograph Plug & Play windshield wiper systems, since they offer great windshield coverage and arm/blade options.

History Lesson: Invention of the Windshield Wiper

One of the mechanisms for which AM Equipment is known is the Windshield Wiper Assembly, but we certainly didn't invent it.  The credit for that goes to Mary Anderson.

US Patent & Trademark Office

US Patent & Trademark Office

In 1902, Mary took a trip to New York City.  She rode a streetcar on a blustery day and observed the driver's battle with the snow and sleet.  He couldn't see through the windshield, so he frequently hopped outside to manually clear the glass.  Needless to say, this was unpleasant for him as well as his passengers, who weren't thrilled about the chilly air or the delays.

Mary returned home and designed the first windshield wiper.  It was a blade on the outside of the windshield that was controlled by a lever on the inside, keeping the driver safe and dry.  In 1903, the US Patent & Trademark Office awarded Mary a patent for her device, but she was never able to sell the idea.

Luckily for us, Mary's invention was later revived and we're now able to provide windshield wipers to improve the safety of many transportation industries.

Windshield Wiper Systems for Bus Conversions

Are you spending your summer transforming a retired bus into a sweet home on wheels?  Don't forget to replace your crusty old windshield wipers before you hit the highways and byways!

bus-conversion.png

If you have an older bus, you'll most likely need to replace your wiper blades.  Are the old ones leaving streaks, chattering, or squeaking?  That's a yes.

You may need to replace the whole shebang.  In that case, take a look at our MCI Wiper / Washer System Replacement Kit.

Keep that windshield clear.  Safety first!

Be Road-Trip-Ready with New Windshield Wipers

Seeing the Southwest in your RV?  Good for you!  Expect a dusty windshield.

Meandering down the coast in your motorhome?  Stunning!  Be ready for salt spray.

Doing the I-10 route in your rig?  Awesome!  Watch out for summer storms.

rv-road-trip.png

Whether you're traversing the country or heading out for a long weekend, check the windshield wiper blades on your recreational vehicle before you go.  You may need a fresh set to keep your visibility at its best through insects, dust, and weather.

The easiest way to replace your windshield wiper blades is to go with the style you already have.  The most popular types for RVs are 28" and 30" blades, either framed or frameless.  Place your order, then check out Atlas Obscura to plan some roadside stops!

NEW PRODUCTS: Marine Windshield Wiper System Kits (+EXTRA SAVINGS)

How does AM Equipment celebrate boating season?  By offering two new Marine Windshield Wiper System Kits at MORE THAN 20% SAVINGS

Radial Kit

Radial Kit

Pantograph Kit

Pantograph Kit

We streamlined options to make ordering easy:  just choose the radial kit or the pantograph kit according to your windshield size and shape.  (Hint:  shorter, wider glass should use radial and square or taller glass should use pantograph.)

Kits include a 212 single speed wiper motor, a wiper arm, and a wiper blade, plus a pantograph adapter for the pantograph kit.

Whether you're replacing an old system that's no longer running up to snuff or your boat never had windshield wipers to begin with, one of our kits can improve your vision on the water, rain or shine... hopefully shine, though.

Upgraded Design: New Pivot Seals

In support of our customers who operate transit bus fleets in Colombia and Peru, AM Equipment developed a new windshield wiper pivot shaft seal that offers additional protection in harsh, humid environments.

Unlike the old seal, the new seal completely surrounds the pivot shaft and housing to prevent water and contaminates from entering the pivot bearing.  It is available on our Plug & Play Wiper Assemblies.

new-pivot-shaft-seal.jpg

Our new seal has also proven to extend the service life of wiper systems installed on delivery trucks operating in the US heartland, where record cold winters have increased the use of road deicing salt brine solutions.

By developing continuous improvements, we at AM Equipment are contributing measurable value to our customers' products.

What's Your Windshield Wiper Park Position?

“Park position” refers to the place wipers stop when the system is turned off.  We designate the park position by which direction the arm travels to reach that location, either clockwise (CW) to park or counter-clockwise (CCW) to park.  These terms speak to directions as viewed from outside the vehicle looking in.

Confusing?  A little.  These diagrams should help.

Is It Time for New Wiper Blades?

There are a few ways to determine whether your current windshield wiper blades have overstayed their welcome.

old-windshield-wipers.png

First, take a look at them.  Does the rubber look cracked and brittle?  The result can be insufficient windshield wiping coverage.  Are the frames rusty?  That can happen when your blades have served you through winter weather or in a marine environment.  Also check to make sure the blades have good contact with the glass, since a bend can hinder them from doing their job.

The easiest way to know you need new blades is by using your current ones.  Do they leave streaks?  Make a squeaking sound?  Chatter across the windshield?  Probably time to say goodbye and start with fresh ones.

How can you keep your blades working at their best as long as possible?  Make sure your windshield is clean, and never use your windshield wipers on dry glass.  Bear in mind, wiper blades aren't meant to last forever because rubber is a natural product that is affected by its environment.  We recommend inspecting your windshield wiper blades every six months and replacing as needed for maximum visibility.

Dust-Resistant Wiper Systems for Agricultural & Heavy Industrial Cabs

Every windshield wiper application has its enemy:  salt for marine applications, petroleum-based sludge for oil rigs, and dust for agricultural and industrial cabs.  In addition to dust-resistance, you need motors with EMI and RF suppression and a thermal breaker to prevent damage from overheating.

agricultural-cab-windshield-wipers.png

Because of the wide range of applications and environments, consider a custom wiper system with AM Equipment's 208 Series or 212 Series DC Gear Motors, or our 2D Pantograph or 2P Radial Plug & Play AssembliesContact us and we'll gladly discuss which options best suit your situation.

How to Measure Wiper Arm Length

Wiper arm length is measured as the straight line distance from the center of the pivot shaft to the center of connection to the wiper blade.  The bridge width between the driver and idler of a pantograph arm is also measured “center to center."

How-to-Measure-Wiper-Arm-Length.png

What if there’s a bend in the arm, as pictured below?  The same advice applies.  To determine the arm's length, simply measure the straight line distance from the center of the pivot to the center of the wiper blade connection.
